Online math degrees are available from the Open University. The math degree may be taken on its own, or with other subjects such as statistics, economics, math for learning and others. The Open University is the oldest distance learning university in the United Kingdom, the degrees are recognized anywhere in the world, and the teaching materials are of the highest quality. The math degrees available from the Open University are listed here.

Online Math Degree at the Open University

The mathematics degree at the Open University is a Bachelors degree. It may be taken full time or part-time. Most students complete the B.Sc. (Honours) degree, which requires the completion of modules that carry a total of 360 points. Most modules are valued at around 30 points. It is possible to complete the degree without honours, and also possible to gain a qualification at lower levels with a Certificate or a Diploma. These qualifications are obtained automatically, en route to the full degree.

The choice of which mathematics degree to take does not have to be made on registering for the course. Although the student chooses a course, mathematics with statistics for example, (s)he may select modules and complete them in any order. This has the advantage that the student may switch to mathematics alone, or mathematics with computing, later in the course.

Online Math Degree Options at the Open University

There is a wide range of options for the prospective math degree student at the Open University. These are listed here, along with a brief description of the course contents. Note that pure mathematics includes mathematical modeling, number theory, complex analysis, and algebra; applied mathematics includes computing, statistics and probability, and fluid mechanics.

  • B.Sc.(Hons) Mathematics: a single-subject degree that covers pure and applied mathematics. Typical career choices after this degree include education, financial (including actuarial sciences), business, computing, accountancy, and engineering.
  • B.Sc. Mathematics and Statistics: a joint-award degree with a core of statistics and probability. Students often take this with either pure mathematics or applied mathematics subjects, but there is no obligation to do so, as there is a list of available optional modules. Typical career choices include statistician, finance (especially actuarial sciences), business, accountancy, and the medical / pharmaceutical industry.
  • B.Sc. Mathematics and its Learning: this is a single subject degree, which as the name suggests, has a focus on a career in teaching. Teaching strategies for mathematics are covered, as well as a range of pure and applied mathematics modules. Career choices tend to educational matters, but the degree is good grounding for other careers such as government, banking, business, accounting, and administration.
  • B.Sc. Economics and Mathematical Sciences: this is a joint award degree that covers the theories of economics, mathematical models for economics, and there is a focus on statistics and computational methods. Career choices include economist, accountancy, business, finance (including actuarial sciences), government and banking.
  • B.Sc. Mathematics and Computing: a joint-award degree that covers pure and applied mathematics, as well as modern computing modules, such as object-oriented programming. This is a very flexible degree, which leaves the student many career options after graduation, such as education, financial (including actuarial sciences), computing, accountancy, business and government.
